Darla gave permission for entry and asked “Penny, can you just ask the cook for some lunch. Do I have any clothes here so I can change? I am beginning to smell as if I’ve been rubbed against the backside of a mule. I need a cloth to wash my face too. Would you mind it terribly?”
“I’ll be happy to get those things for you. I brought you some fresh clothes. Would you prefer to bathe? I grabbed your sweet rose water too.”
Darla thought about that only for a moment “A bath sounds heavenly right now, Penny. You are a good friend. Thank you.”
Penny knew fresh water was something that could not be wasted on a sailing ship but she needed to make Darla feel more comfortable and a bath always raised a lady’s spirits. If there was any lady right now that needed her spirits raised it was her Miss Darla.
“We can spare enough water for a bath for your mistress, darling. Not only will no one care, they won’t know. Here is something for you to think about and maybe speak with her at some point in the near future; who will take care of her once we marry?”
The words thrilled Penny even as she felt ashamed for even considering leaving Darla to fend for herself.
Edward bent to kiss her shoulder and then passionately on her lips. “I will be taking good care of you and you will be much too busy taking care of me.” Edward smiled against her lips and looked into her brown eyes. “I wonder how our children will look. That they should all be as beautiful as you, the world will be a happier place to look upon.”
He called to the cabin boy to heat some water even as he pressed Penny against the door of their cabin. They had a few minutes before the water would be ready and he could feel the heat from this filly ready to warm him. “Rap once upon the door when the water is ready, boy.”
The sound of Penny’s giggles could be heard for a moment and then silence.
Alexander sat down to his lunch in his own cabin. The noise of the galley was too much for his ears and he wanted some time alone to think about his plans. He studied the map and pulled out his letter of marque. The letter stated that his ship was under commission from England. He prayed the trip home to mother England would be without engagement, but this was rarely the case in times of war. The one thing he wanted to avoid was putting the women in danger. If he had to deposit them ashore he needed a safe place that was not a pirate haven. The problem he could see was that there was no shore between here and home. Just wide open ocean and many merchant vessels.
He had come to America over a year ago in search of a new life. It had not been his intent to be disloyal to the crown but the constant need for his attendance upon the court was wearing. He was not a man who enjoyed the attention gained from public life.
He remembered his father laughing at this. His words were “If you are not seen and not heard, when you need help, you will also then be not seen and not heard. You must play the violin and dance upon the attendance of your audience, boy, otherwise there will be no audience.” The words had struck a nerve. His father had been correct to be sure.
